October 1--Day 86

Happy Birthday, China! Today, the thirteen-year-old boy I tutor, Adam, was actually able to tell me what the Chinese celebrate on October 1st, their National Day. None of my college students were able to tell me. And, interestingly enough, the mid-autumn festival, which celebrates the tale of a woman who takes a pill promising eternal life, but instead flies to the moon to live out her immortal life with her pet rabbit, rather than with her lover, is a much bigger deal than their National Day. Tutoring went so well today with Adam. He's so excited to learn, and even though he complains incessantly about the piles of homework he has, he gets all sad when his tutoring session is over. Then the mashed potato making began! Twenty giant potatoes, one blister, and countless Disney songs later (aka, three and a half hours later...), the three giant containers of mashed potatoes were cooked! And what a night it was. All the Americans under one roof (with the adopted Kenyan, of course). Western food. American chocolate birthday cake. Lots of laughs. Our arrangement of "Wonderful, Merciful, Savior." Twenty people singing praise to our Indescribable King. How could it not bring goosebumps?
